Uri: Surgical Strike
This is one of the biggest hits that came out last year, and a perfect for anyone who loves watching war or political movies. The movie starred current heartthrob Vicky Kaushal, and Yami Gautam in the lead roles. The movie was both a hit with the public as well as the critics. The movie gained a mass appeal, especially because it is based on a real story. The catchphrase ‘how’s the josh?’ ‘High, sir!’ caught up with the youth of the nation. Vicky Kaushal played the role of major vihan Shergill, and Yami Gautam played the role of Jasmine d’almeida. The movie was released on 11th January and was directed by Aditya Dhar. The movie was made on a budget of 25 crores and went on to earn around 342 crores.
Plot synopsis: the movie depicted the story of a surgical strike that was carried out by India successfully against militants in Pakistan who attacked the Indian army base in Uri in the year 2016, and caused many casualties.
Ayushmann Khurrana added yet another feather to his cap with this movie. The movie was released on 28th June last year. The movie was a departure from his usual feel-good comedy flicks and dealt with a more heavy and sensitive topic. The sensitive topic was handled well by director Anubhav Sinha. Although the movie did not attract much crowd to the theatres because of the topic, it dealt with. Apart from Ayushmann Khurrana, the movie stars Isha Talwar, Ronjini Chakraborty, namashi Chakraborty, and Mohan Zeeshan Ayyub.
Plot: the movie deals with the rigid caste system in India and the case-based discrimination and crimes in the Indian subcontinent, especially in rural India. Ayushmann is an IPS officer who is transferred to a place outside the city into a rural place where he is horrified by the brutal crimes that are committed in the name of caste, and the criminals are acquitted for their crimes. He tries to change the circumstances in the place.
The movie that was picked for India’s Oscar entry is truly a gem that was directed by none other than the talented Zoya Akhtar. The project offered a fresh pairing that was never seen in a Bollywood movie before– Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Both the actor and actress are known for their acting prowess, and they do not disappoint in this movie. The movie was released on Valentine’s Day, although it was not a romantic movie more of a coming of age movie with music, it spoke to the youth of India and got rave reviews from everyone. The movie and its stars won several awards. The movie also introduced Siddhant Chaturvedi, who stole the scene whenever he came onscreen. Other notable actors who were a part of this project were Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Sharma. The song Apna Time Ayega was a huge hit that was performed by the lead actor, Ranveer, himself.
Plot: Ranveer Singh’s Murad lives in one of the biggest slums of the world, Dharavi, Mumbai. He wishes to become a rapper and a musician, but he is handicapped by his financial situation. He has an abusive father, and domestic violence happens On a daily basis in his house. He also has a feisty but loving girlfriend, who is played by Alia Bhatt. Things seem to look up when he meets and befriends Shrikant, also known as MC rapper in an underground rap event.
One of the biggest blockbusters last year that was released on 2nd October starred two of the biggest stars in the Indian film industry now- Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. The former has been a heartthrob since the beginning of 2000, and the latter is a gen y star. Apart from them, Vaani Kapoor amplified the eye candy in this movie. The movie was indeed a crowd puller and raked in 475 crores at the box office. The project was helmed by Siddharth Anand, and the music was produced by the YRF studios. The movie’s songs were also a huge hit with Ghungroo being the party song of the year, and Jai Jai Shiv Shankar was overplayed on Holi this year. Another political thriller is based on a story that is shrouded in mystery. The film found a release date in the month of April and the cast of the film consisted of veteran actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Pankaj Tripathi, Naseeruddin Shah, Pallavi Joshi, and Shweta Basu Prasad. The project was directed by Vivek Agnihotri and had a budget of about 4 crores.
Plot: When the second prime minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri died mysteriously, it raised a lot of questions in the minds of the Indians. AN investigation was launched to find out the reason behind his mysterious death and to come to a conclusion whether this was planned by someone or was it a natural death.
A remake of the Telugu film, Arjun Reddy, the Hindi version, saw Shahid Kapoor assume the role of the genius but misunderstood doctor Kabir Singh. Sandeep Reddy Venga, the same director who made the Telugu film, directed the Hindi film too. The movie released on 21st June and earns a total of 379 crores at the box office. The film was a super-duper hit with the male population. The songs from the movie, namely bekhayali and Tujhe Kitna chahne lage, topped the charts.
Plot: Kabir is known for both his brain and his anger issues. A first-year student, Preeti, played by Kiara Advani, catches his eyes, and he decides to make her his girlfriend. They start dating, but things become tough for him when Preeti’s father catches them making out, and he dismisses their relationship and instead starts looking for a groom to get Preeti married. The movie is about love and self-destruction.
Backed by red chillies production, the movie starts with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, and the talented Tapsee Pannu. The thriller was directed by the famed director Sujoy Ghosh who is best known for his films like Kahaani. The film was made with a small budget of 10 crores and then amassed around 138 crores in the box office. The soundtrack of the film was not a bit, but the movie got positive reviews. It is a gripping thriller that has Tapsee playing Naina and Amitabh playing Badal Gupta.
Plot: everything was good in Naina’s life– she had a successful company and was also married–until she is caught with her lover and that lover is found dead. Her reputation is put at stake, and she is also looking at some possible jail time because of baseless accusations. She decided to hire a competent lawyer, Badal Gupta, to help her get out of this message with her reputation intact.
Sky Is Pink
India’ s much-beloved actress Priyanka Chopra makes a return to Bollywood with this inspiring movie about a dying girl. She both stars in this movie as well as produces it. Farhan Akhtar is also roped into the project. Zaira Wasim, best known for her role in the secret superstar movie and Rohit Saraf of Hichki, also stars in the movie alongside the older actors. The film was directed by Shonali Bose. The film has some beautiful songs like Dil hi toh hai and Zindagi.
Plot: The film is about the life of Aisha Chaudhary and how her coming into her parents’ life changed their lives. A genetic condition stole her life at the young age of 18, but she remained optimistic until the end. The film takes a look at the effects she had on others’ lives.
With this film, Ayushmann Khurrana makes a comeback to his comfort zone. This fun, feel-good comedy movie is a hilarious ride throughout. The dialogue is clever, and the actors do full justice to their roles. Major props to Ayushmann for pulling off a female voice, and bringing so many laughs. Nushrat Bharucha portrays her role well. Raaj Shaandilyaa, the director of the dream girl, sure knew what he was doing with the script with the excellent bunch of actors. The movie crossed the 100 crore mark to collect 200 crores at the box office. Dil ka telephone from the movie is quite a fun track!
Plot: The movie is about a friendship call centre, where clients call to talk to women for endless hours. Karamveer, Ayushmann, is looking for a job but is not able to find any. His unique talent, he can talk in a woman’s voice, lands him a job at the friendship call centre, but he keeps it a secret from everyone because he is embarrassed about his job. To safeguard this secret, he has to spew lies, and this lie lands him in trouble!
Director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari brings the life of kabaddi champion Jaya to the big screen with Kangana Ranaut portraying the titular role. It was a small budget film that earned a decent amount at the box office. The movie also had Jassie gill playing the role of her ever supporting and ever-loving husband. Richa Chadda plays her best friend from childhood who is still a part of kabaddi, and lastly, Neena Gupta plays Kangana’s mother. The sports biopic was well received by the public.
Plot: Jaya, once a captain of her kabaddi team, left behind her career in sports after she got pregnant. In order to become a good mother to her child, who was born with a weak immune system, she let go of any come-back plans. However, years later, she is encouraged by her family to make a comeback again.
Anubhav Sinha decides to handle yet another sensitive topic in this movie starring Tapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati. Again because this was a woman-centric story dealing with a sensitive topic, the theatres were not flooded, but the movie managed to earn 44 crores at the box office. The soundtrack of the movie is not anything special.
Plot: Amrita Sandhu, tapsee, attended a party with her husband. They had a fight, and her husband slapped her across the face in front of the room full of people. She considers this wrong and abusive and files for divorce, but her journey is not so smooth sailing as she has to deal with society’s idea of marriage and the dynamic between husband and wife.
Saif Ali Khan is back in the role of a lover boy, although this time he is playing the role of a player in his 40s. The movie is also a debut movie, or Alaia F. Tabu is also a part of the movie. The film is produced by said Ali Khan and jackky Bhagnani and is directed by Nitin Kakkar.

After the success of Bahubali, period films have created a separate fan base in India. This film is made for this specific fanbase. This is based on a true story that is amplified with some amazing CGI and action scenes.
Plot: when the Mughals invade western India and capture the kondhana fort, which is the gateway to western India, the Marathas feel threatened. Shivaji Maharaja’s friend and lieutenant Tanhaji takes the responsibility to stop the Mughals from invading further south.
