However, some people use red lentils or masoor and moong dal for making Sambar as well. The Cooking Method For Making Sambar

  • Add the rinsed dal to your pressure cooker and let it boil with about half a teaspoon of salt and water. After five whistles, you need to lower the heat and then cook it for some more time. Mash your dal once the cooking is done.
  • Next, you need to soak some tamarind into hot water because it is what is going to add the tang to the stew. Strain the liquid once you are done.
  • Heat some oil in the pan and then add your vegetables one by one and let them cook for some time. You need to add salt during the process. Then you need to add some water to the mixture and stir it continuously. Add the dal and continue stirring. To the stew, you will then add some sambar powder and jaggery as well.
  • For the Tadka or the tempering, you can add some ghee to the pan and then add the curry leaves and mustard seeds. After your dal has been cooked, add the tempering, and your Sambar will be ready.
