What is coronavirus? Should you wear a mask and when?

A coronavirus is a group of viruses that cause flu-like symptoms along with the acute respiratory syndrome. But what is coronavirus? The current coronavirus outbreak (SARS-CoV-2), is not the only pandemic that is killing mass people globally. But previously two other coronavirus outbreak was seen that too affected the world.

Corona Virus Origin and history

The first coronavirus outbreak was seen in 2002, names SARS Coronavirus, and that too occurred from China. The epidemic of SARS virus killed many people, mainly in China and Hong Kong. Though it started in 2002, it took almost until 2003 to mitigate the outbreak.

Another such coronavirus was MERS coronavirus, which emerged in 2012 in the Middle East, to be specific in Saudi Arabia. This virus affected almost 2494 people since then.

The SARS-Cov-2 genome is almost 79% similar to that of the SARS virus and 50% identical to that of MERS coronavirus.

A recent study of China stated that the intermediary animal responsible for this coronavirus spread are the pangolins as the genomic sequence of pangolins matches 99% with the SARS-CoV-2.

When to use a coronavirus mask?

It is advised by WHO that not all people require a mask. But the following people should use a mask to stop the spread of the pandemic-

  • If you are healthy, but you are taking care of an infected person, then, of course, you need to use a mask
  • If you are coughing or sneezing, then you definitely need to use a mask, as a single droplet of a sneeze or cough can carry 3000 viruses
  • You will be surprised to know that masks are useful only if you wash your hands frequently with soaps for 20 seconds or with 60% alcohol sanitizers.
  • Using a mask is not going to be helpful if you do not know how to dispose of it.
